It is a story of love, loss sacrifice and personal misjudgement akin to recklessness, given the demands of War, Church accountability and claustrophobic social expectations, with the power to either stigmatise, confuse or clarify both adult and child world perspectives. The main protagonists Henrietta and Albert fashion a life outside the boundaries in a manner that appeals to the close quarters community of opposites as they settle in a narrow valley on the outskirts of the city of Hobart on the Australian island state of Tasmania. Whether as a family or individual their stories are told in a style that reflects language of lingering English Colonial stiffness, colloquial Tasmanian idioms and rich Irish settler brogue. The reader is given privileged intimate access to the fictional character’s inner struggle as they confront the dynamics of their constantly changing lives. The community’s forced evacuation from the valley is a poignant moment in time when the Tasmanian bush environment is destroyed, the impact of which is seen predominantly through the eyes of the young whom the reader is encouraged to respect for their child like philosophy and resilience in all things.
